Tips For Maximizing Your Space In A Storage Unit

Shelly James

A storage unit can be the ideal solution to declutter your home, downsize, or simply store the things you don't have room for at home. However, you'll need to put some thought into how you pack your storage unit to make the most of the space. Here are some space-saving tips to help you maximize the square footage of a self-storage unit.

Create A Plan

Sometimes it helps to get out some graph paper and actually plan how things will fit into the storage unit. This can help avoid any confusion on the day you can start moving things in since you'll know exactly where everything goes and how it will all fit together. That diagram can also act as a great key to remind you where things are located.

Use Uniform Containers

As tempting as it may be to use what boxes you have on hand to save money, it may be best to avoid that for a storage unit. Uniform containers are key to making sure that everything stacks properly. You don't want to run into a situation where weak boxes collapse due to the weight on top of them, or stacks of boxes topple over because they do not have a solid base. This can all be avoided with uniform containers.

Disassemble Furniture

It's always worth breaking down furniture if you are able to. It may take a bit more time to get the item ready for self-storage, but that's perfectly fine if it means saving a lot of space. Dining tables can easily have the legs removed so that the table can be placed on its side, and some couches can even be disassembled into sections so that they can be moved as smaller pieces that are lightweight and easy to stack.

Fill Boxes To The Top

It's important to fill all your boxes to the very top for a couple of reasons. This not only uses the most out of the space within the box but helps protect the box as well. Empty space near the top will create weak sides of the cardboard, which can eventually collapse under the weight of the boxes on top of it. If you do want to leave a gap at the top of a box, just make sure that it's placed at the top of a stack.
